I found an interesting book about sailor suit history (including many pics and also some sailor suits in film). Book is called "Der Matrosenanzug - Kulturgeschichte eines Markenartikels" and is also about the first German clothing brand Bleyle in 1889. First sailor suit was according this in 1773 (King Friedrich Wilhelm III. as boy).
