Story 14: Sailor collars - types and dressing on

Especially after watching "Lord Jeff (1938)" I wondered about the design and the interiour technique of sailor collars and how to dress them on.

I searched the web about it and there are some sewing patterns, but most are for cosplay costumes and are quite simple and probably not historically correct. I also found some pics and shopping results of real sailor collars.
The standard collar is pictured on top left (sorry, for my simple drawings).
It exists of probably 2 layers (top and bottom) and near the neck there seems to be a bit more roomy fabric at least on top.
Underneath on the chest there is an insert called dickey, which is sometimes only a piece of cloth which can be buttoned to the blouse. It can be seen hanging out after playing rugby in "Dangeorous Holiday". First I thought that undearneath it's just a T-shirt. There are also other kinds of dickeys, like in Lord Jeff (pic below) which are similar to a vest and be tied together at waist height. In Lord Jeff the dickey seemed to be attached at the collar. Different types of dickeys and other parts of the collar are pictured at

http://www.album1900.com/glossary/sailorsuit/sailorsuit.php

Sewing patterns are here (honestly I don't quite understand that technique of the 2nd part. Is that "sailor extension" an unfolded collar, a dickey or a blouse?)

http://egl.livejournal.com/2371011.html

I also found some interesting different historical collars of the Royal Canadian Navy (between 1910 and 1968). One pointed collar and one with a 3rd medium piece. At (click there on the top left links showing some pics)

http://mpmuseum.org/index3.html

A similar collar which has to be buttoned on the jacket is at

http://mydarlingdarlinghurst.blogspot.com/2011/01/across-border-woolloomooloo-retailers.html

In Japan there seem to be other collar styles (school uniforms for females, or manga?). There are Kansai, Kanto, Sapporo and Nagoya collars, obviously different in specific regions. I assume the Navy uniforms for real sailors have another design than those. There are also some very simple sailor suits, some even of rubber or only with a printed collar. I have seen also kids visiting a school museum. And the collars the today kids wore seem also very simple and not authentic. For more about Lord Jeff (rated 10) and Dangerous Holiday (rated 7) see that entries. Pic below showing Freddie Batholomew, Mickey Rooney and I think Terry Kilburn. Funny scene. The boy is hidden under the collar after putting it on. "Where are you lad ?"

I hope this will be useful for someone. Perhaps I should also search for patterns of Lederhosen.

Update: For more pics and other styles and the purpose of a sailor collar, see

Sarah and Son

Drama, nominated for an Oscar
-Year: 1930
-Year in film: 1930s ?
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Bobby ~13 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: other boy, collar
-Available on DVD: yes *
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Philippe De Lacy (pictured) in a white long sailor suit, white collar with probably 3 stripes. Also a younger boy ~10 ys in a dark short suit (not sailor suit) and a white collar.

De Lacy, of French origin (1917-1995) also starred in Peter Pan (1924) and Love (1927) aka Ana Karenina (1927).
I don't know this complete movie, novel by Timothy Shea. I only noticed him at the end of this movie. Good sailor suit/sailor uniform. His collar flying up in the wind. He fell in the sea and getting wet, but not shown coming out of the water. Also a good scene from behind while hunking down.
Starring Ruth Chatterton, Frederic March and Doris Lloyd.

Quite good scenes, but for the few scenes only rating 5 for now.
I saw a DVD-R offer, most likely not an official release (some others on DVD-R are). Also not sure if it's into Public Domain. At least not on archive.org, yet.

Still some spam referring links from Russia.
Most still seems to search for Lederhosen and not sailor suits.

I only have some few Heimatfilms left and maybe have to search for movies from East Europe and Russia. I still haven't found a good feature film with scouts in Lederhosen. Perhaps I should also check documentaries, short films and else. But it's a lot of work (research, then watching and blogging for 2 blogs).

All I Want for Christmas (1991)

Christmas film starring Ethan Embry
-Year: 1991
-Year in film: 1990s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Hallie ~9 ys, sailor dress
-Who in clothing 2: boy apron
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating:  3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Thora Birch (pictured, 8 or 9yo and looking even younger) in a short blue sailor dress, blue short collar, 2 stripes (short scene). Long white stockings or tights. Also another older girl with a collar (but not a sailor dress), and 13 yo Ethan Embry in a white apron.

I don't like this family Christmas movie also starring Leslie Nielsen, Harley Jane Kozak, Jamey Sheridan and others. Some quite funny scenes including a white mouse and a good brother sister relationship, but there a much better movies. Both were nominated for a Young Artist Award. Directed by Robert Lieberman and rated G.
I don't like such very young girls, but it's almost Christmas time and it's quite unusual to wear a sailor dress in the 1990s.
Rating 2-3. (I missed some short scenes at the beginning, but don't expect much more there).

Weißer Holunder

Heimatfilm starring Germaine Damar
-Year: 1957
-Year in film: 1950s
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: men, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: women Dirndl
-Available on DVD: VHS only?
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Some men in longer buckskin Lederhosen dancing a Schuhplattler. Also women in Dirndl. I don't know/don't remember this movie and don't know of any boys, teens (or girls) in Lederhosen. Probably there aren't any (obviously no kids credited on IMDb and now pics found), but I have to check this the next broadcasting.
But good Schuhplatter dance. I like that. Film aka "Das Echo vom Königssee" also starring Carla Hagen, Carl Möhner and Michel Lang, as well as famous singer Lolita, Die Geschwister Fahrnberger, Das Enzian-Sextett and Max Greger and band. Directed by Paul May ("08/15").
Might be a good and famous Heimatfilm, romance, musical, but can't rate higher than 3 for now. No clips with Lederhosen at YouTube.

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938)

Farm family movie starring Shirley Temple
-Year: 1938
-Year in film: 1900s ??
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: women, sailor dresses
-Who in clothing 2: girl overalls
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating:  3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Some young women in blue sailor dresses (pictured). Also 10 yo Shirley Temple in beige heavy worn bib overalls (see my other blog, rating 4 for now). Of course also others in historical clothing of the 19th century. Sorry, I don't know this complete movie yet. This is probably a good family movie including farm content. Movie is in b&w and also available colorized. I have to check this again also for other actors. For more infos and a trailer see my other blog. And for another Shirley Temple film with her in a white sailor suit see "Captain January (1936)" here, rating 3 for now (also starring boys).

Das alte Försterhaus

Heimatfilm starring Anita Gutwell
-Year: 1956
-Year in film: 1950s
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: Frank ~ 6 ?, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: Frank, shorts, Lederhosen (men only)
-Available on DVD: no
-I own: no
-Clothing occurrence: low-
-Rating:  3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Ulli von Berg in a long dark blue sailor suit, blue collar, 3 stripes  and also in shorts, not sure if also in Lederhosen. I can only confirm men in Lederhosen for now.
I found this Heimatfilm but no clips nor even pics except for some publicity pics. One is at

http://www.cinema.de/film/das-alte-foersterhaus,1301709,ApplicationGallery.html

Probably a good Heimatfilm also starring Paul Klinger, Trude Hesterberg, Ralf Wolter, Max Greger and others. Directed by Harald Philipp (1921-1999, Winnetou, Drei Damen vom Grill). Not released on either DVD or VHS. There was a release of an album. Last aired 2008. I can't say much more about it and hope for a soon broadcasting. Rating 6-7 for now.

Update: I have now seen this movie completely. I was very disappointed of this sailor suit. Very few scenes and the boy was much younger than thought (from pics) Not 9 but 5 or 6 yo. And no Lederhosen except for men. Musical and comedy scenes.

Now rating 3 instead of 6-7.

Platz an der Halde

Documentary, German kids in the 50s
-Year: 1954
-Year in film: 1952
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 7-12, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes *
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating:  7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Some kids in Lederhosen, partly smooth finish (or nappa leather), partly with suspenders. Not sure about the amount of Lederhosen scenes.
Another suggestion. Thanks very much! It's a documentary (98 minutes) by FWU for usage at schools. 3 parts about German kids in Northrhine Westfalia (Ruhrgebiet) after WWII in the 50s, playing soccer and else. I haven't checked it completely. The boys are quite young.
Available on DVD (from the producing company, but there very expensive (95 EUR) as it includes the rights to show at schools, but also available at LWL for 15 EUR). But I think I wouldn't buy it anyway. I think there are also other similar documentaries about that time. Also reminds me of the series called Brausepulver, rating 7, color, see

/2011/09/brausepulver-geschichten-aus-den.html

I have to check this agin. Rating 7 for now. However some quite good scenes.

Lord Jeff

Drama starring Freddie Bartholomew
-Year: 1938
-Year in film: 1930s ?
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 12-18 ys, sailor suits
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: no
-I own: no, but seen
-Clothing occurence: very often
-Rating:  10/10
-Rating: **********
-Comment: Freddie Bartholomew (1924-1992), Mickey Rooney (1920-), Terry Kilburn (1926-), Peter Lawford (1923-1984) and a lot of other boys (I think only teens, at least 50, perhaps almost 100) in different sailor suits. Many boys in white sailor suits, dark (blue) collar, 3 stripes, also dark sailor suits, according to movie poster blue, with blue collars, 3 stripes and also collars without stripes, appears completely black. All pants full length. In fact they are all rather real sailor uniforms.

Rooney helped Kilburn dressing on his collar and also undressed his own one. I think I make a separate story entry of that scenes.

Finally another 10 rating movie. I have to give a 10 rating because of several reasons. I have never seen a movie with - so many teens in sailor suits, 3 different sailor suits, so many sailor suit scenes, and with so much dressing/undressing scenes showing the complete collar technique. Also one of the most famous child actors of the 30s and also a good plot about 4 boys (orphans) going to a marine school. Good scenes of 2 rowing contests (blue, later white suits) and the game musical chairs and other actions. Rooney and Batholomew also fighting in a corn field in dark sailor suits and getting dirty.

Originally I searched for the other versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and found an image of this film. I don't like Rooney; Bartholomew is quite good, but I like this movie very much. Bartholomew also kissing a woman.

There is no (official) DVD nor VHS release yet. I wonder why. Also no streaming clips webwide. A nearly perfect (sailor suit) movie, although not my favorite of my 10 rated. This movie would also be worth to be colorized.

Pics showing small 12 yo Kilburn on top (the youngest boy has the longest collar, also with a missing tooth), then Rooney and Bartholomew (small pic left), one of the longest collars, dressing on collar and collars without stripes.

Info 37: Updates - Der schönste Tag meines Lebens

Now I have updated "Der schönste Tag meines Lebens (1957), rating 7, starring Michael Ande and the Vienna Boys Choir. Now also confirming Lederhosen (not sure before, if only sailor suits).
One more pic of Ande in Lederhosen at it's entry

http://sailorsuitsandlederhosenfilmblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/der-schonste-tag-meines-lebens-1957.html

I also have now completely seen Garmischer Bergspitzen (2010) confirming very few Lederhosen scenes of this teen boy. Rating 3.

Summer Magic

Disney musical
-Year: 1963
-Year in film: 1910s ?
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Nancy ~ 16 ys, sailor dress
-Who in clothing 2: boy in overalls, others historical cl.
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: I think this is Hayley Mills in a white long sailor dress. Blue collar, 2 red stripes and scarf. Probably more actors. Also a boy with a collar and in bib overalls (Jimmy Mathers ~9 ys, see my overalls blog, rating 6).

I don't know/don't remember this movie, but the historical clothing look good. Nominated for a Golden Globe. I like those funny musicals and period films.
I have to check this again. Also starring Eddie Hodges ~15 yo ("The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 1960"). Rating 5 for now. Perhaps not good enough for buying it, but not sure. I wait for the next TV broadcasting.

Unser Pauker

TV family series starring Georg Thomalla, 20 episodes
-Year: 1965-1966
-Year in film: 1960s
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 9-12 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: other shorts, jeans
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating:  7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Some boys in Lederhosen. I think 1or 2 in smooth finish Lederhosen (or nappa) and some few others in buckskin Lederhosen, at least one younger boy with suspenders.

I have never heard of this series before and found this by coincidence during a web image search. Quite good and for it's time funny family series with a family from Berlin with 3 kids (1 girl) and dad Thomalla as a teacher. 2 boys as main character of the family, I think the blond boy on the left pictured below. He sometimes wears buckskin Lederhosen, 2 zippers. Kids are showing about half of this series including classroom scenes. Each episode is less than 30 minutes.

I like smooth finish Lederhosen and this is a good series, but somehow I don't like the actors with smooth finish Lederhosen. These are a bit too long. It's not only because of the missing color. I even considered buying this DVDs, but I checked out as much as possible and don't need it. Though rating 7-8. Not to be confused with "Der Pauker" also b/w rating 9.

Summer Holiday (1948)

Musical starring Mickey Rooney
-Year: 1948
-Year in film: ~1900
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Tommy ~  10 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: overalls, others in historical clothing
-Available on DVD: yes *
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Jackie "Butch" Jenkins (1937-2001, pictured) in a white short sailor suit, white collar and I think 2 light blue stripes and a straw hat. Also in light brown worn bib overalls (shortly on my other blog, or see clip). Also of course lots of others (grown ups) in historical clothing, maybe also women in sailor dresses or similar with a collar.

No better view of him in sailor suits, there is an excellent publicity pic (in b&w)

http://i.fanpix.net/images/orig/7/2/72slhlclpqlwwll.jpg

This Technicolor movie was filmed in 1946 but released in 1948. There is also another trailer on YouTube called Summer Holiday 1947. Released officially as a DVD-R and on VHS and Laserdisc. I even considered buying it but am not sure about this movie and I don't like expensive DVD-Rs and wait for it. And I assume rather few scenes in sailor suit as he isn't the main character and also wearing other clothes.
But I like those period movies. Based on the stage play by Eugene O'Neill and starring Mickey Rooney, Gloria DeHaven, Frank Morgan and Walter Huston. Funny scene as he was riding down the stair rail (pic below). I like this freckled kid actor, but he is very small.

I will check this again and hope for a TV broadcasting. Rating 7 for now.
I also have to check the first adaption "Ah, Wilderness! (1935) also starring Mickey Rooney (then as Tommy).

St. Florianer Sängerknaben - Musikantenstadl 2011

Volksmusik show, November 19th 2011
-Year: 2011
-Year in film: 2011
-Country: Austria
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 9-12 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: boys ~9-12, sailor suits
-Available on DVD: no
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: low *
-Rating:  8/10
-Rating: ********
-Comment: Some boys of the choir St. Florianer Sängerknaben in white long sailor suits with pointed blue collars, 3 stripes, and some in buckskin Lederhosen. Also performing Schuhplattler and other Gaudiplattler (Show Plattler) like Watschnplattler (slap dance) and 2 boys slapping each other on their bottoms (pictured). Also other stage perfomance later with boys in sailor suits with a water costume. First song was Edelweiss while the boys in Lederhosen danced around the pole (pictured below). After that treble soloist Alois Mühlbacher singing parts of Mozart's Zauberflöte.

I don't watch this show regularly and saw it yesterday by coincidence. All acts of this choir are in total 12 minutes. One boy is a bit overweighted, others very thin, one small and one very tall. But I liked that perfomance and haven't seen something like this (Kids Watchnplattler) for a long time. Giving even rating 8. I will check out this choir. I always wondered why there's a need of so many German speaking boys choirs. I assume others than the Vienna boys choir and the Thomanerchor are not the first choice. Now I see, that it's already on YouTube but can't be embeeded. It's at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zjlngBS0-g

Rebroadcasted on Monday Nov 21th 2011.
Update: At the rebroadcasting they had removed the complete performance of the ship and sea scene with the sailor suit choir (looked like Titanic, but singing a Waltz probably by Strauss) and the duet with Mühlbacher. So half of the choir scenes were lost. This scene is in the clip on YouTube with without the solo part.

Die Geschichte vom goldenen Taler

DEFA film, fairy tale by Hans Fallada
-Year: 1985
-Year in film: 1800s ?
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: boy Putzmännchen ~ 13 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ??
-Rating:  4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Dirk Brenneman ("Als Unku Edes Freundin war") as miniature Putzmännchen and boy Michael, ~13-14 yo in a light blue sailor suit with dark blue collar, 3 stripes and sailor's hat (more like real sailor clothing and perhaps short pants). Cover also showing some sort of striped bathing suit or similar. Sorry no pics. One is at

http://tilsiter-lichtspiele.de/programm/2011/kinderfilme/geschichte_vom_goldenen_taler04.jpg

I don't know/don't remember this complete movie and can't say much about it. Sailor suit looks quite good. I like some of these classic fairy tales but not sure about this rather unusual one. Starring Antje Straßburger as main character Anna and I think few or medium scenes of this boy in real size. Also a scaring dark man (Hans Geiz). Directed by Bodo Fürneisen who still makes those films. There is a general trailer of these fairy tales, but no scenes of him. I have to wait for the next broadcasting. Rating 4 for now. There was even a book with behind the scenes pics (Hauptdarstellerin gesucht - Wie ein Film entsteht).

Wo der Wildbach rauscht

Heimatfilm starring Walter Richter
-Year: 1956
-Year in film: 1950s
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 8-11 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: altar boys
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating:  4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: At least one younger boy in long, I think dark buckskin Lederhosen with suspenders and a Tyrolean hat (pic above) and some boys in short buckskin Lederhosen (pic below). Also some altar boys.

I didn't had the time yet to watch this complete movie and have to check this again the next broadcasting. Probably a quite good and typical Heimatfilm, but I assume few good Lederhosen scenes (as no boy had a major role). Also starring Ingeborg Cornelius, Ingmar Zeisberg and Helga Frank. Directed by Heinz Paul and released on DVD. No trailer. Rating 3-4 for now.

Captain January (1936)

Comedy film starring Shirley Temple
-Year: 1936
-Year in film: 1930s ?
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: girl Star ~ 8 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: boy, historical clothing
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Shirley Temple (pictured) in a white sailor suit, dark blue scarf. But it's not a sailor dress, I think with jeans or other light blue long pants and (flared?) white sailor's pants and a white sailor's hat. DVD cover showing a colorized blue collar (not sure if that is in the movie). Film aka "Shirley Ahoi!" and filmed in b/w. I think it's into Public Domain, however not on archive.org yet but on YouTube (in b/w).
Film is rated G and 77 minutes long. I haven't the time yet to watch it completely, but I assume rather few or medium sailor suit scenes as she also wore dresses. Also famous song and dancing parts. Not sure if others in sailor suits except sailors. There are also boys acting in historical clothing, one colorized pic is this

http://images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/7100000/Captain-January-Screencap-shirley-temple-7184213-500-383.jpg

Filmed before in 1924 (silent movie). I have to check it again. Shirley is very young and I don't like her. Rating 3 for now. I found this movie the first time at TVTropes but found it shortly later during research for classic movies.

Dangerous Holiday

Classic drama starring Ra Hould
-Year: 1937
-Year in film: 1930s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Ronnie ~ 13 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: breeches, underpants
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes DVD
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating:  7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Ronald Sinclair (then called Ra Hould, born in NZ), 1924-1992, in short dark probably blue sailor suit (pictured). Blue collar, 3 stripes. Also in (real) breeches and in underpants while swimming (3 boys in swimming trunks), also other shirtless/dressing/undressing scenes.

I searched the web for "A Christmas Carol (1938)" (not for this blog) and found this child actor. Then I found perfect studio pics (Paramount) of him in a short white sailor suit and long dark collar (dated 1936)

http://s11.allstarpics.net/images/orig/6/j/6j0z0x5oyo9xz0xx.jpg

http://s11.allstarpics.net/images/orig/7/h/7hl9mhjfarltm9j7.jpg

There is only one movie in 1936 "Beloved Enemy" where he also wore uniforms but I coulnd't find it yet. 3 other films in 1937 where he was credited as Ra Hould including this. I Couldn't find clips on the web, so I bought it. Not sure if he wore a white sailor suit in one of his movies, probably it's just a publicity pic. He even has an own page on histclo.

Only 2 scenes of him in sailor suits at the beginning, but good scenes also playing ball with other kids and fighting on the ground, making himself dirty and his white "shirt piece" hanging out. The plot is a bit weak, "Rich kid run away", but exciting and I like it. He through his (not sailor suit) collar to the ground. Also other good scenes in breeches and boots (Ra, pictured below and a man) and swimming scenes in white underpants.

After "The Music Man (1962) with 145 minutes this is with 52 minutes rather a short film and can be watched in one turn. Also starring Hedda Hopper, but Ra is the main character.

DVD is 4:3 NTSC RC0, image and sound quality is acceptable. There are color screen captures on the back of the DVD case and I first thought that this would be a colorized version but I like it b/w. Some extras like trailers, scene selection and catalogue. Not sure if the movie is PD, at least I couldn't find it on the web. The "Special Edition" DVD is copyrighted, I wonder what is special about it. But I'm glad that this is available on DVD.
Despite of the few sailor suit scenes rating 6-7.

This was the first b/w DVD I bought (except for "Little Lord Launtleroy (1936)", but that wasn't then for sailor suits). I will check more classic movies and perhaps bought another ones, nowever most are Public Domain.

Wenn die Glocken hell erklingen (update)

I found this clip on YouTube and other video hosting pages from different uploaders and wasn't aware and not sure that this is from the movie "Wenn die Glocken hell erklingen" (1959) featuring Michael Ande and the Vienna Boys Choir (Wiener Sängerknaben). The clips are titled by songs from that movie ("Mit Musik durchs Leben", and "In einem kühlen Grunde".) Some Lederhosen looks even like smooth finish leather.

I think that must be the last movie starring Michael Ande in Lederhosen and sailor suits (see my list of Michael Ande films).
I like as well the movie, the choir and the Lederhosen and sailor suit scenes.
Michael Ande pictured on bottom right pic in the middle (white shirt).
Same songs also in "Der schönste Tag meines Lebens" (1957), rating 7 for now which I will also update soon.

For more infos (and more pics) see it's entry (rating 8 for now, but I still have to check it completely).

Story 13: Old women in sailor dresses, long collar

As announced I make this story entry of "The Music Man (1962)".
At 1h25 there are I think 5 older women (40-50 ys +) in sailor dresses dancing on a stage. White sailor dresses, white long collars with light blue edges and scarfs, longer dark blue skirts. And this lady at the piano I believe has the longest collar.

However this is a very good, Oscar nominated musical also showing 7 yo Ron Howard in a sailor suit, girls and teen girls in sailor dresses and historical clothing and also boys and men in overalls (my rating 9, for overalls even 10)  and I like long, white and unusual collars, but this is one of the worst scenes with sailor dresses.
Old, fat and ugly women, so I don't think I have to show more pics of them.
At least I have my first rating 1 entry.

For more infos about this movie, see it's entry at

/2011/09/music-man-1962.html

and List 12 of long, white and unusual collars.

Der Schandfleck (1956)

Heimatfilm starring Gerlinde Locker
-Year: 1956
-Year in film: 1950s ?
-Country: Austria
-Who in clothing: boy ~ 7 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: men Lederhosen, girls Dirndl
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: At least one young boy in Lederhosen. Sorry, no pics. I searched for movies starring old Heinrich Gretler (who starred in other good Heimatfilms) and found this image with a boy in Lederhosen

http://images3.cinema.de/imedia/8840/1868840,MRum1fCz2O6_eLuS_9LWpLPsl+_dc+gypBT4ClHIYRtBjmePWMNeFgd3fPSbJjq6wzKb_fFyuTeHO9i+18XSGw==.jpg

Also men in Lederhosen and girls and women in Dirndl. Novel by Ludwig Anzengruber, starring Gerlinde Locker, Hans von Borsody and Lotte Ledl. There are also at least 3 other movies of this novel published in 1877. Looks like a good Heimatfilm. There is a trailer on the web (not on YouTube) but without that boy. I have to check this and the other versions and hope for a soon broadcasting. Rating 5 for now. Boy is very young, but perhaps there are even more and older boys in Lederhosen. DVD is available.

Kai aus der Kiste (1988)

Family DEFA film
-Year: 1988
-Year in film: 1923
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: 2 boys~ 13 ys, sailor suits
-Who in clothing 2: other in historical clothing, breeches
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating:  7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: I think at least 2 boys in sailor suit looking jackets. I don't know their names. Boy on top is the same as on bottom left. Directed by Günther Meyer, novel by Wolf Durian. I don't like most East German films, but this is one of my favorites. I haven't seen it for years and I even had recorded the documentary "Kai für Kiste gesucht" about the casting. Main character is the 13 yo Christoph Zeller as Kai (I think the red page boy). I have to check this again. Very good film, but for "sailor suits" only rating 5 for now. I didn't knew that there is also a 1960 film, but haven't find any pics or clips of that. Good plot about advertising bubblegum and this Berlin kids' gang.

Update: After checking some more parts of it, I will upgrade from 5-7. Very interesting historic clothes (also grown ups, incl women). And also a boy in breeches and boots (pic bottom left).
I still have to check it completely especially for the collar of the 2nd boy (pic bottom right) but I assume rather few (good) sailor suit (and very few breeches) scenes.

Info 35: Updates

Updates incl. pics of
-The Music Man (1962), Ron Howard (pictured on top), girls, women sailor suits/dresses, rating 9, was 7 (see also my overalls blog, rating 10 with shirtless boys)

-Susanne und der Zauberring (DEFA), boys Lederhosen, rating 8 (pic below)

Der Mann, der nach der Oma kam

Family comedy film starring Winfried Glatzeder
-Year: 1972
-Year in film: 1970s
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: Danny ~ 5 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating:  3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Rolf Kuhlbach (pictured) in Lederhosen, I think buckskin. This is the first suggestion for this blog from an anonymous reader. Thanks. I haven't seen the complete movie but many parts throughout it. Aren't there any others in Lederhosen? Probably not. I don't like neither film nor actor. The boy is very young, maybe 5 or 6 years or even younger. And that's nothing special for a boy that age in Lederhosen (same as toddlers in bib overalls that I usually don't add). I also don't like most movies of the 70s. Directed by Roland Oehme ("Ein irrer Duft von frischem Heu", see that entry on my overalls blog, also rating 3), novel by Renate Holland-Moritz. Movie might be quite entertaining. If I have missed something (scenes or actors), please comment. Rating 2-3 for now.

The Whipping Boy

TV family film with costumes
-Year: 1995
-Year in film: 19th century
-Country: UK, USA, Germany, France
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 15, 12 ys, historical clothing
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: often *
-Rating:  7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: 15 or 16 yo Truan Munro (pictured right) as 11 yo orphan and whipping boy Jemmy (Tommi in German) in light blue satin breeches like aristocratic clothes. And Nic Knight (left) as Prince Horace aka Prince Brat (Prince Boris in German).

Not Lederhosen or sailor suits, but very good historical clothing and spanking scenes (of both boys). One of my favorite movies of it's kind (like Prince and the Pauper). Novel by Albert Sidney Fleischman (Newbery Award), died in 2010. Good plot and good acting of both (although the Prince is a bit young overweighted). Film rated G aka "Prince Brat and the Whipping Boy". In the second half in the woods they don't wear those white ruffles anymore.

Info 34: Lederhosen pics webfinds

Lots of new pics from flickr user Karl'sfriend. My favorite flickr page featuring boys in sailor suits, Lederhosen, stockings and historical underwear. Also catalogue pics. Most pics are b/w. I also have seen pics from movies there. I have found this page some time ago and added it to my link list, but rarely checked this site later.

Most readers probably prefer Lederhosen, one good image with a family, including 2 teen boys in Lederhosen of the 1950s is this (but others are also worth for a look).

Deux frères (2004)

Adventure drama family film
-Year: 2004
-Year in film: 1920
-Country: France, UK
-Who in clothing: Raoul ~ 11 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Freddy Highmore (pictured) in short white sailor suits. Also other tropical clothing like hats and probably others in historical clothing of the 1920s. Film aka "Two Brothers" rated PG, directed by Jean-Jaques Annoud. One César and one Genesis Award. I found this by coincidence I think at TVTropes. Usually I don't like those adventureous jungle and tiger movies and wouldn't have expected sailor suits scenes in here. So I will have to check this movie as well the next TV broadcating, but I assume rather few sailor suit scenes. I like Highmore in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Rating 4 for now. There is also another film with historical clothing with him "Finding Neverland (2004) set in 1903" and also a film with him in beige bib overalls "Arthur et les Minimoys". I will check this and make an entry on my other blog.

Info 33: Comments

Thanks for the first comment on this blog (on Info 2) with a movie suggestion (Der Mann, der nach Oma kam). I will check it and make an entry soon.

Please note: I like comments and suggestions. Please don't link to movie download sites, shopping sites or other questionable websites.
I also don't take pics from other websites.

Helpful would be year of movie (often there are more with the same title), name and age of actor (if known) and other details (scenes at what running time).
I would also appreciate if someone can provide (self captured) pics of entries where missing or if someone find new trailers or dates of upcoming broadcastings of rare movies (same on my overalls blog).

Few (new) Lederhosen and Heimatfilms these days on TV (probably I already have the most important ones). So I don't know how many I still can find.

Siegfried & Roy: The Magic Box

Biography about the magicians, in 3D !
-Year: 1999
-Year in film: ~1951
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Siegfried ~ 12 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: Siegfried ~19, Lederhosen
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: I think Dillion McEwin as young (12 yo) Siegfried Fischbacher (pictured) and John Summers (unpictured) as teen Siegfried (~19 ys).

I found this by coincidence on a blog called amoeba.com. I haven't checked the complete movie yet, but I think only some few scenes with the younger boy at the beginning (however there are also many flashbacks and show scenes of the real grown up Siegfried and Roy in between). Suspenders are smooth finish and black, sadly the Lederhosen are of beige buckskin leather and quite long. Today I don't like much magicians but the boy acts very convincing. Narrated by Anthony Hopkins, film aka "The Magic Box". I have to check this completely (perhaps also buying the DVD) This IMAX movie is in 3D and 3D glasses are included by the DVD. Despite the few scenes I rate even 7 for now. Perhaps the only 3D Lederhosen movie?

Info 32: Historic sailor suit images, US beach 1905

I found some historic sailor suit images (PD) while searching for sailor suit films.
Quite interesting. At least one at a Beach in Florida in 1905 (pic above) and kids and teens on the beach/in the water in sailor suits and sailor dresses (pic below). Looks very funny at a beach with that.

I like vintage images and already searched the complete FSA/OWI and NCLC collection of 175.000+ farm images for overalls pics. I made 2 picasa albums with the best pics (see my overalls blog). I will check for more sailor suit pics and maybe I can even find Lederhosen pics somewhere. The collection from the Detroit Publishing Company (47.000 pics, but probably very few sailor suit pics) is at

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/det/

My PD Lederhosen/sailor suit album with PD films and pics is at (only 1 already announced Lederhosen pic yet)

More Lederhosen (color) pics are on my Creative commons album at (which I already announced)

Der Junge mit dem großen schwarzen Hund

Kids film, scenario by Christa Kozik
-Year: 1986
-Year in film: 1980s
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: boy ~ 6 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating:  3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: A young boy in buckskin Lederhosen with H-style suspenders, I don't know his name (maybe more). Another East German (DEFA) family film, scenario by Christa Kozik, novel by Hildegard and Siegfried Schumacher. I think I have seen it many years ago, but can't remember it. Probably a good family entertainment. The boy is very young and I don't like the Lederhosen. Main character is 10 yo Ulf (Niels Anschütz) unpictured in jeans. Released with another film on DVD "Icestorms Flimmerstunde" (green cover). Aka "The Boy With the Big Black Dog". Anyway I prefer Heimatfilms and smooth finish Lederhosen. So rating 3 for now, but have to check again next broadcasting. No trailers on YouTube.

List 13: Purchases

This are my latest purchases, dates, ratings and if I like them. All my personal thoughts. Similar list on my overalls blog.
Not including TV recordings. Most of them are bought for other reasons.
Perhaps this might be useful for someone.
I haven't really bought a DVD just for Lederhosen scenes yet. Either they don't exist or I already have recorded it from TV. Good to make this list. 2 entries were missing on my A-Z list.

Kids film, novel by Christa Kozik
-Year: 1983
-Year in film: 1980s ?
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: Moritz  9 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating:  7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Dirk Müller in I think smooth finish Lederhosen. Maybe more actors (at least in short pants). Sorry, I can't provide pics or trailers for now. one pic is at

http://images3.cinema.de/imedia/9247/1869247,MRum1fCz2O6_eLuS_9LWpLPsl+_dc+gypBT4ClHIYRv4r5TY24IM9cRM2SCMKP06elknLpHFbZJg4Rtww2ME0w==.jpg

I have seen this movie many years ago but can't remember all scenes. But I think it's a good movie with an interesting plot a talking cat and a girl from a circus. Also starring Franziska Troegner ("Mama ist unmöglich"). Film won a Golden Sparrow. Released on DVD "Icestorms Flimmerstunde" (blue cover) with an other film or separate. I have to check this again the next TV broadcasting. Rating 7 for now.

Der Sündenbock von Spatzenhausen

Heimatfilm /comedy starring Hans Moser
-Year: 1958
-Year in film: 1950s
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~7-11 ys, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: men, Lederhosen
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Some boys and men in buckskin Lederhosen. I think only at the last 3rd of this film. Most or all in longer black Tracht Lederhosen and lots of men also in brown Lederhosen (boys also in the middle of the marching band, pic left). International title: The Scapegoat of Spatzenhausen. Starring Hans Moser, Beppo Brem, Isa Günther, Jutta Günther and Eddi Arendt. Film is quite good and funny, but Lederhosen scenes could be better. I didn't noticed teens and no good close up views as boys are supporting actors. I have to check this agin the next TV broadcasting, rating 5-6 for now. There is a trailer on YouTube from the movie company, but it's a compilation of different films and not showing better Lederhosen scenes than pictured.
