This is my 2nd blog about feature films, TV series and documentaries with boys, girls, men and women in sailor suits, Lederhosen and other historical clothing of the 19th century and beyond. I collect informations, trailer videos, low-res images and personal comments/ratings. This blog was introduced in 2011. 2012-2020 on Wordpress. Now I'm back. Update will take a while.

Raspoutine (2011)
Biography starring Gérard Depardieu
-Year: 2011
-Year in film: ~1908-1916
-Country: France, Russia
-Who in clothing: Alexis ~4 ys ?,sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: 10 ys uniform, others
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: very low?
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Igor Boudkevitch as young Tsarevitch Alexei in a short white sailor suit (long white stockings), also long black pants (at least in publicity pics, see comments) and a sailor's hat.
For the sake of completion as previously announce on List 20: Alexei Tsarevitch and Rasputin films.
Had been aired some weeks ago, but I missed the beginning. I haven't noticed any sailor suit scenes and also none of the older Alexei nor others in sailor suits. However this is mainly a biography of Rasputin (played by Depardieu, pictured on left holding him). Quite interesting movie and Depardieu did a good job. But I can't any higher than 2-3 for sailor suit scenes of this little boy (movie is a bit better).
Another French Rasputin film is in production starring Jean Reno as Rasputin. And also The Young Rasputin (USA, 2014).
("Tsarevich Aleksei (1996)" starring Aleksei Zuyev as Alexei; directed by Vitali Melnikov is about a different 1700s Tsar.)
Update: Now I have seen a pic of a boy about 10yo in a green uniform. Not sure if this is Alexei as well. Maybe there are more scenes of an older Alexei in a sailor suit?

Exclusive pic#37 Sailor suit boy Hamburg 1920s
This CDV showing a blond younger boy from 1920s Hamburg in a short white sailor suit. Typical blue collar, 3 stripes. Rather short on his back, so longer at the front. No dickey. His little sister didn't wear a sailor dress.
Typical pic, dad is missing. They don't look too happy. Just a brief smile for the camera.
I can't say much more. As usual click for high-res and magnifying glass and push to + on Picasa.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Adventure film starring Bill Murray
-Year: 2004
-Year in film: 2000s ?
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Werner ~9 ? Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: men speedos
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ??
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: I think Leonardo Giovannelli in as well black and light blue Lederhosen (or similar) with H-style suspernders (maybe buckskin leather?). Also men in speedos and diving suits.
Finally another Lederhosen entry. And even a weird one. Sorry for the bad pics taken from the trailer. One other pic (black Lederhosen)
http://www.fanpix.net/0674052/013385490/the-life-aquatic-with-steve-zissou-2004-picture.html
I can't say much more about it as I haven't seen this movie yet. I found it by coincidence during research for pics for The Royal Tenenbaums (bedroom blog, rating 4, Thursday on TV).
Also starring Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett.
Rating 4 for now.

V poiskakh kapitana Granta
Adventure mini series. Novel Jules Verne
-Year: 1986
-Year in film: 1865
-Country: Soviet Union, Bulgaria
-Who in clothing: Robert ~14, men, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: others, hist. clothing, hats
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurrence: medium
-Rating: 8/10
-Rating: ********
-Comment: I think Ruslan Kurashov as Robert in a long sailor suit. Light blue big collar (often blowing up in the wind). But also in other clothes. Sometimes a sailor's hat. Also other sailors.
Even better than the 1938 b&w version "Deti kapitana Granta" (rating 6). 7 long episodes (each movie length). Completely on YouTube, but I only checked it at high speed. Quite handsome blond teen boy (but I don't like curly hair). Good collar (however there are even longer collars in other movies), some good scenes like touching the collar. See other entries, search term "touching" and "flying" and other films tagged Soviet Union.
English title "In Search for Captain Grant" and "Looking for Captain Grant". Russian title "В поисках капитана Гранта". In the 1962 Disney film "In Search of the Castaways" Robert (played by Keith Hamshere) probably didn't wear a sailor suit.
Rating 8 for now.

-Who in clothing 2: others, hist. clothing, hats

-Comment: Yakov Segel (1923-1995) in a rather long white sailor suit. Blue collar, squared at front. 2 Stripes, including the dickey. Filmed in 1936.
As previously announced at V odno prekrasnoye detstvo (1979), directed by Yakov Segel, I checked this movie. Completely on YouTube but unfortunately no quick index pics, so I checked it briefly and found this pics.
Looks very interesting. I think many good and some unusual scenes and unusual collar. Wrinkled collar (pic 1 und hanging upside down at a rope). Pic 2 showing the length of the pants. The collar seems much lighter in color there, but maybe is just the light. English title "Capt. Grant's Family" and "Captain Grant's Children", Russian title "Дети капитана Гранта".
I also have to check the 1962 Disney remake called "In Search of the Castaways". The 1986 mini series "V poiskakh kapitana Granta" aka "In Search For Captain Grant" also looking very good (probably rating 7-8, coming soon).
Rating 6-7 for now.

V odno prekrasnoye detstvo
Comedy film
-Year: 1979
-Year in film: ~1930s ?
-Country: Soviet Union
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 5-8 ?, sailor suits
-Who in clothing 2: others, hist. clothing, hats, overalls
-Available on DVD: yes ?
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: 5 yo Petya as main character (or his 5 yo granddad) in a short medium blue sailor suit and some other boys in sailor suits. Also lots of grown-ups in historical clothing /costumes also at least one woman with a sailor dress or similar (at 33 min.) The beginning minutes are set in the 1970s and also shows him in brown bib overalls. But the rest of this movie is a flashback story from his granddad set in around the 1930s.
Some interesting scenes like circus scenes, the boy is also being undressed while holding him and changed his clothes. The boy is very young and most collars are rather short. Few scenes with sailor hats.
English title "During a Beautiful Childhood", Russian title "В одно прекрасное детство". Completely on YouTube. Directed by Yakov Segel (who also starred himself in "Deti kapitana Granta" (1938) aka Capt. Grant's Family. I have to check this b&w Jules Verne film as well.)
Rating 3-4. Maybe a good film for it's time, but actors are too young. I can't say much more as I don't understand Russian.

Tom Sawyer (1917)
Silent film
-Year: 1917
-Year in film: ~1850s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: boys ~8-21, hist. clothing
-Who in clothing 2: girls, women
-Available on DVD: no ?
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Kids teens and grown-ups in historical clothing including collars, hats and I think bib overalls. Filmed in Hannibal, Missouri. Tom Sawyer was played by Canadian Jack Pickford (1895-1933).
I previously had an entry on my bedroom blog (rating 4).
Very interesting movie and clothing (for it's time). It's even not the first Tom Sawyer film. I didn't had the time to check this 59 minute film completely.
Rating 3-4 for clothing scenes for now. Probably no real sailor suits.

List 20: Alexei Tsarevich and Rasputin films
This is a list of all known movies starring Alexei, Romanov and Rasputin. Maybe the most filmed sailor suit topic about a single boy in sailor suits (and uniforms). Tsar Alexei is shown at different age, sometimes there are other boys and girls as well in sailor suits. And sometimes white and blue sailor suits. More infos and some more pics at their entries. If I missed one, please comment. Christian Bale is one of my favourites (Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna, pic 1). Note that there are many more documentaries with original b/w or colorized footage but I only list feature films starring other actors here in sailor suits. Rasputine (2011) had recently been aired, but I missed the sailor suit scenes, so I take one from the official trailer. Note that I don't know all movies completely.

Kinder der Berge
Heimatfilm starring Barbara Rütting
-Year: 1958
-Year in film: 1950s ?
-Country: CH, FL
-Who in clothing: boys ~8-11 ?, shorts
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: At least some boys in shorts. Not sure about Lederhosen. Main kid actors are a boy and a girl.
I recently found by coincidence a short clip on YouTube, so I don't know this complete movie yet. Aka "Kinder der Alm", "Ein wunderbarer Sommer" and "Das Glück auf der Alm". Also starring Maximilian Schell, Heinrich Gretler and others. Novel "Ludmilla" (which is a weak cow) by Paul Gallico ("The Poseidon Adventure").
Looks quite interesting. Filmed in Liechtenstein (it's only Heimatfilm), so probably kids from there.
I hope for a soon broadcasting. There's even a DVD and VHS available, but I think I don't buy it as I'm not sure about the amount of quality of scenes (with younger actors) Maybe few scenes?
Rating 4 for now. I wonder why there's no more info on the web.

Mer om oss barn i Bullerbyn
Film/mini series. Astrid Lindgren
-Year: 1987
-Year in film: 1928
-Country: Sweden
-Who in clothing: Olle ~11, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: girls, collar, boy stockings
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Harald Lönnbro in a short dark blue, almost black sailor suit. 5 very thin stripes. I think black stockings and boots. Also one boy in his underwear and long black stockings after bathing in a wooden tub (2 boys still inside). I remember a skinny dipping scene (same actors) probably in the series "Alla vi barn i Bullerbyn (1987)" which isn't in this 1986 movie. At least one girl at school wearing a brown collar, some others white lace collars, but no real sailor dress.
About 2 rather short scenes about Christmas and New Years Day 1928/1929 in that sailor suit, so festive clothing. Looks quite rare so completely dark and the stripes can only be seen at close up scenes. I wonder why not more kids wearing sailor suits and dresses at least at school. Maybe because it's cold in the winter?
Somehow I don't like this remake of the 60s. Crispin Dickson Wendenius is quite handsome. First I wasn't sure about the year and thought of the 40s. Some scenes looks very modern. Some scenes like at Christmas reminds me of Fanny och Alexander.
Soon on my bedroom blog. Also see "Alla vi barn i Bullerbyn (1960)" on my bedroom blog (rating 8).
Sailor suit scenes rating 3-4.

Mer losse d'r Dom in Kölle
German carnival show for women
-Year: 2013
-Year in film: 2012
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: (teen) boys, girls, sailor costumes
-Who in clothing 2: men, women, sailor costumes, other
-Available on DVD: no
-I own: yes, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Dozens of members of the "Tanzcorps Rheinmatrosen" (I think from Köln-Mülheim) in blue/white sailor suits. Boys, girls, teens and grown-ups. And others in other costumes, including sailor costumes in the audience, and I think also Lederhosen and overalls. Shortly after that performance the carnival child Prince (of the Kinderdreigestirn) appered as usual in white tights. Later another performance with grown-ups of this group only.
1st pic showing front and back of both collars, pic 2 showing the length of the suits and dresses. Some kids were also upside down or at horizontal position, but the collar flaps were not falling down.
At least 3 younger boys and some more teens and men. The boys wearing long blue suits and pants and white collars. The girls in white blouses and blue collars, mostly very large and long. Typical short dresses for carnival. They were dancing and performing some tricks.
The show is called a bit different than the song "Mer losse d'r dom en Kölle". Show was recorded in late 2012 in Cologne and aired yesterday. Sorry, I recorded too late and my recording has a bad image quality due to record in long play and very fast action scenes.
Quite interesting, maybe they appear in other carnival shows again and maybe next year as well. Not sure if it can be watched again online.
Rating 4-5. I like white sailor collars. Sadly few good scenes.
Probably also of interest, todays "Kinder Alaaf" on Kika (update now on my overalls blog rating 6). Also see "Kinderstunksitzung" (rating 4) on my overalls blog.

Exclusive pic#36 older sailor suit boy and his mom
This pic showing an older boy (maybe 12 yo ?) in a sailor suit very close to his mom from Nordhausen (East Germany). White suit, blue collar, rare 5 stripes. Scarf and a chain. I don't know the date, maybe 1920s or earlier ?
What else to be said? Ears a bit sticking out (unlike his mom). Hair quite short. Looks like a studio pic. Where's dad? At war?
The boy was not wearing a dickey. Low neckline so collar flap is rather short. But quite interesting.

Weltenbrand
WWI, WWII documentary, 8 episodes
-Year: 2012-2013
-Year in film: 1914, later
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys sailor suits
-Who in clothing 2: other, hist. clothing
-Available on DVD: no ?
-I own: yes, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurrence: often *
-Rating: 6/10 ?
-Rating: ******
-Comment: At least some German and French boys in different sailor suits. Long collars, also flying up collars. All pics from ep. 1. Also diffent hats including larger straw hats. Also showing soldiers (in green uniforms) and other grown ups including women and girls in historical clothing. I have seen girls in white dresses but haven't noticed any girls in sailor dresses (yet). Also sailor men (in s1e3).
Very interesting colorized documentary about WWI and WWII. The first colorized I've seen and the first in HD. I missed the beginning. Episodes 1 and 2 will again be rebroadcasted at 18.30 and later new episode 3.
The favourite game of the boys was "playing War" with wooden guns.
I have to check the other upcoming episodes as well. Documentary and novel by Guido Knopp (his last docu). Sönke Neitzel again often explaining between the footage like in other documentaries I have here.
Rating 6 for now.
Update: 1st season of 3 episodes now completely seen. No notable scenes in ep. 2. Episode 3 has even more boys in sailor suits and also some teens in one group (still WWI, I think in 1918) some also with H-style suspenders but no Lederhosen, and about 3 younger boys alone in different scenes. Also sailor men (but collar flaps not really shown).
First I wasn't sure if there are really 8 episodes. Season one has this 3 episodes about WWI. So 5 episodes still to come later (unknown date), not sure if they are already produced. Maybe there are even more interesting scenes later, but there are many other movies about WWII (even colorized).

Shao Lin xiao zi
Comedy film aka Shaolin Popey
-Year: 1994
-Year in film: 1990s
-Country: Taiwan, Hong Kong
-Who in clothing: teen girls, sailor fuku
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Some teen girls at school in sailor fukus. There are also younger and older boys acting (young monks and I think also teen boys) but probably not in sailor suits. There is also a sequel (same year).
I found it by coincidence but I only checked it briefly on YouTube. I can't say much more yet. There are maybe better (Asian) movies. Romance and comedy film.
Original titles "旋风小子" and "笑林小子". Also starring Taiwanese teen boy singer Jimmy Lin and teen girl Vivian Hsu. Most sailor fuku movies are Japanese and the round collar is also quite rare. Sadly short collar flap on the back.
Rating 2-3 for now.

The Gamma People
Sci-Fi film starring Paul Douglas
-Year: 1956
-Year in film: 1950s
-Country: UK
-Who in clothing: boys ~6-12 Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: boys, girl shorts
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low *
-Rating: 6/10 ?
-Rating: ******
-Comment: Many (teen) boys including main character Hugo (Michael Caridia, pic 2) and at least a girl in good shorts with belts, and some boys in traditional Lederhosen, most of them with H-style suspenders. Also men in Lederhosen. Filmed in Salzburg, so probably supporting actors from Austria.
Very interesting movie, I found it by coincidence (other movies set in Tyrol) during research for today's Heimatfilm (starring Oliver Grimm, but set during winter so probably no Lederhosen).
I only checked the official clips on tcm. I assume rather few Lederhosen scenes. But more scenes in shorts.
Funny and interesting plot about an evil child and transforming kids into creatures without brains. Directed by John Gilling, also starring Eva Bartok, Leslie Phillips and Walter Rilla.
Rating 6 for now. Would be better in color.
