This is my 2nd blog about feature films, TV series and documentaries with boys, girls, men and women in sailor suits, Lederhosen and other historical clothing of the 19th century and beyond. I collect informations, trailer videos, low-res images and personal comments/ratings. This blog was introduced in 2011. 2012-2020 on Wordpress. Now I'm back. Update will take a while.

How Green Was My Valley (1941)
Drama starring Roddy McDowall, 5 Oscars
-Year: 1941
-Year in film: 1890s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: girl, sailor dress
-Who in clothing 2: boys breeches, hist. cloth.
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Obviously at least one girl (about 10-12 yo) in a white sailor dress, blue collar (1st pic on the left), also other kids with string ties and boys in historical clothing including breeches or similar. Also starring Roddy McDowall (1928-1998 "Flicka"), Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O'Hara.
There are also 2 later TV series (also in color) which I also have to check. Looks quite interesting, but I can't say much more yet. I found it by coincidence. Novel by Richard Llewellyn and is set in a Welsh mining town hence the British clothing.
Rating 3 for now only but unsure. Movie and actors might be better. Completely on YouTube but I don't had the time to check it at slow speed.

The Brady Bunch Movie
Family film
-Year: 1995
-Year in film: 1990s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Cindy 11, sailor dress
-Who in clothing 2: 70s clothing
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Olivia Hack in this chequered medium length dress with a white splitted collar (front and back the same) and red ribbons, also at the pigtails.
During research for this Brady movie for my bedroom blog I found this interesting clothing. I don't like this modern movie. The original series (1969-1974) is much better (3 boys and 3 girls). The movie is set in the 1990s but they still wear 70s clothes.
For more infos about the series see my bedroom blog (rating 7, including a bunk bed). No entry of this or other Brady movies yet.
Rating 2-3 for both clothes and the movie. Again, I don't like the 70s.

Poll
Period drama
-Year: 2010
-Year in film: 1914
-Country: Germany, Austria, Estonia
-Who in clothing: Oda 13 + girl, sailor dress
-Who in clothing 2: boys, hist. clothing
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: I think Paula Beer in blue/white striped sailor dress, blue collar and at least a younger girl with a white collar (sitting behind her). Also boys in historical clothing, but I don't know of any in sailor suits. And men in white uniforms and obviously the girl in a bathing costume. Unfortunately I missed the beginning of this movie.
I don't like this older teen girl and most of this film is probably rather boring. I think few interesting sailor dress scenes. But I have to check this again later.
Aka "The Poll Diaries", directed by Chris Kraus. Some Awards like a Bambi and a Bavarian and German Film Award. Rather few infos and pics on the web. There's a trailer but no sailor suits, so no need for embedding it.
Rating 4 for now.

-Who in clothing 2: woman, men overalls

-Rating: 7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: 12 yo Lukas Huber as Ludwig Thoma in dark brown almost black buckskin Lederhosen with suspenders and Tyroleaon hat in 2010 episode "Duttenfeiler". The boy is pictured on the far right. Sorry, for the bad pic (taken from one of the official behind the scenes clips), better pics:

I found this by coincidence on the official website after updating this entry on my overalls blog (rating 2, woman in 1980s overalls and later also grown up Hans Kraus who coincidentally also played Ludwig Thoma, also see Tante Frieda, Onkel Filser and other Lausbubengeschichten, rating 8)
Unfortunatley I haven't seen this episode yet and I also couldn't find any clips on the web, only this pics. But looks very good. He also drinks beer as Lausbub Ludwig Thoma. Maybe I have seen some few parts of it (last Christmas?)
Also men in Lederhosen, there are some few and short clips on Youtube (other episodes). I hope for a soon rebroadcasting. Schuhplattler /Bankplattler scenes at least in "Obandlt is!" (set in 1925). Some few episodes are available on DVD, sadly not this one yet.
Rating 7 for now.

Priklyucheniya Toma Soyera i Geklberri Finna
Tom Sawyer 1981
-Year: 1981
-Year in film: ~1850s
-Country: Soviet Union
-Who in clothing: boy, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: other hist. clothing
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: very low
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: I only noticed this young boy in a long white sailor suit, blue long collar during the fence painting scene (I think at 25 minutes). Also of course lots of others in historical clothing. Pants with rare suspenders (obviously one suspender only) also bow ties and similar and straw hats.
Quite interesting Tom Sawyer TV movie (sailor suits are very rare in them). 225 minutes. Very good props, setting and clothing. But I prefer other Tom Sawyer productions and US actors. Russian title "Приключения Тома Сойера и Гекльберри Финна", English title "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn (1981)".
Also a quite good bedroom scene (soon on my other blog). Some scenes like the tooth pulling scene reminds me of the 1979 version "Huckleberry Finn and His Friends".
Rating 3-4 for this brief sailor suit scene. Rating 5 for the movie.

Exclusive pic#35 sailor suit boys 1900s class
And another big class pic. Almost all boys wearing sailor suits. But very different and some interesting ones. About 1900s. Can't say much more. Maybe Northern Germany. Some boys looking very angry, some are obviously brothers, only one is smiling.
Click for higher res, then magnifying class on Picasa.

Schön ist die Welt
Musical Heimatfilm starring Rudolf Schock
-Year: 1957
-Year in film: 1950s
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: Hella ~35, Rudolf ~42, others
-Who in clothing 2: (teen) boy ?
-Available on DVD: no
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Renate Holm (on left), Rudolf Schock, 1st pic on right and 2nd pic on left (both without suspenders and 2 zippers) and some other men in buckskin black and some in brown Lederhosen with suspenders. One young boy in black shorts with suspenders and one teen boy in long black or similar pants. Maybe leather but can't say for sure (both). Kids right at the beginning (should be set in the US, but most likeley German teens), but very short scene. The Watschnplattler scenes are on a Ludwig Thoma stage play (outside), also other costumes, but nothing of interest.
As announced this had just been aired. Rare Heimatfilm but rather few Heimatfilm scenes. Also rare a woman in Lederhosen. She had to change her clothes in that alpine cabin as her dress was wet. Rudolf Schock helped her closing the belt and cuffing up the Lederhosen. She said the Lederhosen are rare and complicated and he likes her in those.
I don't like this Heimatfilm. Famous actors like Willy Millowitsch, Rudolf Vogel, Herta Staal and Paul Löwinger. English title "Fair is the World".
Rating 3-4.

Today on TV (3sat 16.15 h) this Heimatfilm. At least Rudolf Schock, another man and a woman in Lederhosen. Also kids acting, but not sure if in Lederhosen. No entry yet, coming soon.
Also starring Willy Millowitsch. I think not on DVD yet.

-Who in clothing: teen boys, sailors
-Who in clothing 2: snow bibs, boardshorts
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: 5 members of the band One Direction in dark blue sailor suits, typical but good long sailor collars. I think only 2 of them wearing white sailor hats.
Also on my overalls blog (3 wearing snow bibs, without jacket, rating 3). Also other clothes like boardshorts (shirtless).
For more infos see my other blog. I found it during research by coincidence. The sailor suits are not so bad. However short clip and even fewer sailor suit scenes.

Wenn einer was versprochen hat
Family film
-Year: 1976
-Year in film: 1970s
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~6-12, Lederhosen (?)
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: no ?
-I own: no
-Clothing occurrence: often ?
-Rating: 5/10 ?
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Some boys in very tight and short shorts, not sure because of the image quality but I think could be Lederhosen, maybe nappa or synthetic fabric. At least a younger boy in pants (Lederhosen ?) with suspenders and also this shortalls or similar. Also swimwear (boys and girls) and scenes without any clothes.
Quite interesting but typical East German DFF movie. Probably most like other scenes like skinny dipping. That's nothing uncommon in East German movies and this blog is for Lederhosen and historical clothing only.
Maybe I have seen this movie but can't remember it completely. I don't like the (fashion of the) 70s and boys with long hair. But could be worse. Most boys are maybe about 11 and 12. I prefer Heimatfilms and more handsome actors.
Rating 5 for Lederhosen/fashion.

Ellen Foster
Hallmark drama starring Jena Malone
-Year: 1997
-Year in film: 1970s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Ellen 12, sailor dress
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: At least 12 Jena Malone (pictured) as 11 yo abused Ellen in a rare long blue sailor dress. Blue white and red striped short collar and blue dickey.
Emmy nominated Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. I found it during research for my Hallmark list (on my overalls blog). I don't know/don't remember this movie. Rated PG-13, novel by Kaye Gibbons.
Obviously set in the 1970s, so late setting of a sailor dress. Also starring Julie Harris, Ted Levine and Glynnis O'Connor.
Rating 3-4 for now. Probably few scenes at court.
A Lederhosen entry coming next. I also updated Too Young the Hero (17 yo Rick Schroder as 12 yo) not only in white but also blue sailor suit. That film now also on my bedroom blog.

TV drama starring Jane Fonda
-Year: 1984
-Year in film: 1940s
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: girl ~ 9 ?
-Who in clothing 2: boy 8, 11 overalls
-Available on DVD: no *
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: very low
-Rating: 3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: A little girl in a blue sailor dress (maybe Nikki Creswell ?).
Good farm movie; Emmy Award and nominated for 2 Golden Globes. Rating 5 for now on my overalls blog.
I have checked this at high speed but only found a short scene of this little girl. Looks also more like a costume and it's quite rare to wear a sailor dress in 1940s USA.
For more infos and pics see my other blog.
Rating 3-4 for now (for sailor dress scenes). Sorry I currently still have any Lederhosen entries.

Páni kluci
Family film, novel Mark Twain
-Year: 1976
-Year in film: ~1850s ?
-Country: CSSR
-Who in clothing: boys ~14, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: other hist. clothing
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurrence: low *
-Rating: 6/10
-Rating: ******
-Comment: At least two boys in real white sailor suits, blue collars, blue dickeys, 3 stripes and also other kids and grown ups in historical clothing. Boys with string ties, a boy in a lace collar, also a girl in good clothing incl. a straw hat. Most scenes at 56 min. I only checked this movie at highspeed and only noticed few good scenes. I only saw the rear of the collar flap of the boy (1st pic) which isn't long (pic 3). Long black stockings but different pants. The boy is also pulled by his ears, not sure if also real spanking scenes. Obviously also teen girl or young women in sailor suits (1st pic background) but I haven't noticed close-up scenes.
Looks like a very good and interesting period movie. I found it by coincidence during searching for a title of an unknown film (was "Tajna starog tavana", rating 8 on my bedroom blog).
English title "Boys will be Boys (1976)", German title "Die Herren Jungen" and "Die Herren Buben", loosely based on Tom Sawyer. I only noticed the famous painting fence scene. Main characters Thomas, Hubert and Josef. 87 minutes, one movie or mini series in two parts. Probably the only Tom Sawyer in a sailor suit.
Finally another movie with real sailor suits. But due to few interesting scenes I only rate 5-6 for now.
There is a 4:3 Czech DVD I think with English Subtitles. Also a German VHS.

Story 70: touching and correcting collar
As announced this pics are from Buddenbrooks (1959), rating 7.
Liselotte Pulver touching with both hands the collar at the shoulders of 14 yo Hanno Buddenbrook (Reinhold Zobel), also correcting and folding his collar putting it inside. Very interesting and funny glance. Probably kids don't like that. For more pics and infos see it's entry at

Die Heiden von Kummerow und ihre lustigen Streiche
Family film starring Paul Dahlke
-Year: 1967
-Year in film: 1900s
-Country: East/West Germany
-Who in clothing: boy suit w./ collar
-Who in clothing 2: other hist. clothing
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 3/10 *
-Rating: ***
-Comment: At least one boy in a green suit with a long collar flap. Pics from the end of the movie. I don't remember his name, he's not one of the lead characters. Maybe some of the clothes/pants are of leather, but probably no real Lederhosen at least not with H-style suspenders.
Had been aired during Christmas. I have seen this movie several times and didn't remember sailor suits. In fact I watched it for bedroom scenes for my other blogs but missed most of the movie this time.
Some interesting scenes and also some quite handsome kids, but somehow I don't like this movie anymore after watching it many times. Novel by Ehm Welk, also starring Ralf Wolter, Theo Lingen and some others from West Germany.
I think there's at least a slap in the face but I'm not sure if real spanking scenes are shown, so I have to check this again the next broadcasting or when I have time to watch my recording.
Rating 2-3 for the clothing scenes, movie is much better (rating 6-7). "Die Gerechten von Kummerow" (1982) is also very good, but not often shown on TV. (Coming soon, at least on my bedroom blog.
