Emil und die Detektive (1954)

Kids film novel by Erich Kästner
-Year: 1954
-Year in film: 1950s ?
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 7-12 , Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurrence: often ?
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: I think many boys in Lederhosen (pictured). I think both buckskin and smooth finish. I don't know all names of the actors, probably most are uncredited background actors. Peter Finkbeiner as Emil Tischbein. Earlier screenplay by Billy Wilder. Here with this remake it's the same, I don't know of any sailor suit scenes, but lots of Lederhosen and other short pants. I think this movie is much better and more famous than the first b/w version. For more infos see entry Emil und die Detektive (1931) below. I saw this by coincidence as a preview. Broadcasting is on August 26 on Anixe 17.25 h (I think also online stream). No trailers or clips to embed. I will update this entry, after seeing this, but not sure if I have time to watch this online (not on channel Das Vierte). I can't rate higher than 5 for now as I don't know if there are many good scenes. Most of the boys seem very young. Probably a very good and exciting film.

Update: I couldn't watch the online stream as I don't use the Internet Explorer. I think it will be aired again, but I won't install the IE just for this film. One famous actor here is Roland Kaiser who is not the famous singer.

Update 2: text lost for the 2017 update. I also have the 1931, the Disney 1964 version and Käster und der kleine Dienstag. More info and re-upload of 4 more pics.

Die Kinder aus No. 67

Family film set in 1932-1933
-Year: 1980
-Year in film: 1932-1933
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: girl ~ 11 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: boy ~ 10 ys Lederhosen, others in uniforms
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes DVD
-Clothing occurence: medium *
-Rating:  6/10
-Rating: ******
-Comment: A girl in blue white striped sailor suit dress with blue collar (I think May Buschke as Miriam, pictured left with Bernd Riedel as Erwin) and at least one young boy in Lederhosen (not sure if smooth finish). Also scenes of kids in German uniforms of 1933. Award winning film (even more than the 3 mentionend at IMDb) about a children gang in Berlin of the 1930s. Novels by Lisa Tetzner. I like it and some scenes are very good. I think one of the best scenes is where the girl splashes white paint into the face of Erwin (by coincidence) and then tries to remove it. I have to watch this film again at slow speed.
Complete film has of course clothes of the 1930s but I remembered few good scenes of sailor suit and Lederhosen. Also some even more historical costumes like Erwin as Napoleon.

DVD is 4:3 PAL RC0. Good image quality and even extras (interactive background texts within the film, other infos and scenes from the actors' earlier childhoods. Film aka Die Kinder aus der Nr. 67, and Nummer 67. International title The Children From Number 67. DVD has "" (numero) instead of Nr." No trailer.

Emil und die Detektive (1931)

Kids film novel by Erich Kästner
-Year: 1931
-Year in film: 1920s ?
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 7-12 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: At least 2 boys in white sailor suits and at least one younger boy in blue sailor suit (pictured). I think I have seen this movie many years ago and so I don't remember all scenes completely. Not sure about Lederhosen. And I didn't had the time to watch it recently, but I will check it next TV broadcasting. Lots of actors, so I don't know all their names. Most of them might be uncredited background kids. Quite good and exciting film (for that time). There are also 4 later films, partly foreign productions. The color version of 1954 (available on DVD together with the b/w version) is with a young boy in buckskin Lederhosen. But besides a film poster I couldn't find any clips or trailers on the web. I don't like the modern remake of 2001 (starring Tobias Retzlaff). But I will check all films again. Film aka Emil and the Detectives. Famous novel published 1929. Not sure about the time in the film. Probably timeless and different in later films. I will make a separate entry for the 1954 Lederhosen film.
Update: I have just seen a preview on TV of the 1954 version which will be aired on Anixe on August 26. Entry with pic follows shortly.

The Seven Little Foys

Drama starring Bob Hope
-Year: 1955
-Year in film: 1913 (sailor suit)
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: girl ~ 8 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: other historical costumes, bib overalls
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: yes, DVD
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating:  6/10 *
-Rating: ******
-Comment: I think this is the youngest daughter and 3rd youngest kid of Bop Hope. I don't remember her name. Short scene in blue sailor suit at the end of the film. Also some different stage costumes, but I can't find the bathing costumes depictured on the DVD cover in the movie. Also a teen boy in bib overalls (also some short scenes, but very good, including spanking on the overalls), for more infos of film and DVD see my overalls blog. Rating 6 for complete film, for sailor suit rating would be only 3.

J'ai voulu rire comme les autres

Film by Bernard Dubois, novel by Jean Cayrol
-Year: 1980
-Year in film: 1918
-Country: France, Italy
-Who in clothing: 6 boys ~5-15 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2: bathing costumes
-Available on DVD: no (VHS *)
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating:  10/10
-Rating: **********
-Comment: First, please note: This movie is very rare. I don't know this complete film and don't own it, so please don't ask.

I did a lot of research and there should be some VHS tapes titled "Les enfants pillards" for usage at schools in Germany. I don't know if this is true and if they are still available. But they probably wouldn't sell them either.
The film is about 6 boys (brothers, partly cousins) who spent their last summer in WWI alone in a house in rural France. For more about the plot there is the autobiographically novel "Les enfants pillards" which was published in 1978.
Picture top left showing 9 or 10 year old Julien Dubois as Jean-Baptiste (son of the director), there is also a younger, different actor of the same name. Also starring at least one of his brother in real life. I don't know the name of the other actors pictured.
White and blue sailor suits and also 1900s bathing costumes. Probably some more clothings and also other actors. Although I only saw some parts of this film I give rating 10. I like the actors. Julien Dubois also starred in "L'amour en fuite" (Truffaut, 1979), 1984 in short film "Place Clichy" (Paris vu par ... vingt ans après), also directed by his father, and in Scout toujours... (1985) and other films. I wonder why this film hadn't been released yet on DVD. Author, actor and director are famous.

I found 2 more pics to show the sailor suit of the main character. At bottom left his collar can seen entirely. Complete blue collar without stripes, wide scarf like the others. Striped dickey. At bottom right a white buttoned jacket for outside, dark blue collar with 4 stripes and a black or dark blue sailor's hat. I don't like collars without stripes and he looks strange with that hat. But obviously that is historically correct.
As I don't know the complete movie it's possible that he and the others also wearing other sailor suits or even other clothes. (Update: I don't think that they wore other clothes. Someone said that the movie doesn't start at home like in the novel but driving to the holiday home. For more infos see the comments.)

I hope that there will be a DVD, I would buy it or at least a broadcasting.

Der ganz große Traum

Film starring Daniel Brühl
-Year: 2011
-Year in film: 1874
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: boys ~ 12 ys, sailor suit
-Who in clothing 2:
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating:  5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: At least 2 boys in blue sailor suits and 1 in medium blue sailor suit (pictured) I don't know their names. I found this new film by coincidence (a recommendation). Looks quite good but I'm not sure of the amount of sailor suit scenes (perhaps there are even spanking scenes?) As this is mainly about soccer, there might be also other (sport) clothings. I have to check this, if this is on TV. Good historic scenes inside a school class. There are not many films like this nowadays. A nomination for a German Film Award for costume design. But I rate only 5 for now. I think I don't like the kid actors.

Aber Vati!

GDR family film /series 3+1episode
-Year: 1974, 1979
-Year in film: 1950s ?
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: 2 boys 11, Lederhosen
-Who in clothing 2: 2 other boys,  Lederhosen, pajamas
-Available on DVD: yes
-I own: no
-Clothing occurrence: often ?
-Rating:  9/10
-Rating: *********
-Comment: At least 2 boys (twins Kalle und Kulle, played by Ralf and Rolf Lemcke) in buckskin and in possibly nappa leather Lederhosen and I think also other boys. I don't remember this complete series but is a famous series of the former DDR. I am pretty sure that the kids in East Germany didn't had real leather pants. I think 2 zippers on each side (perhaps also on the buckskin Lederhosen). I don't know all scenes but I think I wouldn't like or even buy this series nowadays. But not sure and have to check the next TV broadcasting. There was also a sequel in 1979 ("Aber Vati! Fünf Jahre danach"), possibly no Lederhosen as teens? Small pic above is from ep. 3. Rating 4 for now. Boys are quite young and I prefer Heimatfilms. Some clips are on the web but they can't be embedded.

Update: After checking some more parts of this series, I'm pretty sure that the main characters wore nappa Lederhosen (pic on top from ep. 1). Looks very good. Upgrading from 4 to now 9. Also both in good pajamas. I still have to check all episodes more carefully. Still not found any Lederhosen in ep. 4.

Lederhosen seems to be of very thin fabric, maybe synthetic and not nappa. I also had an update in 2018 and one pic of the 1979 episode.
